Kids Connect Hope Canada is a youth-inspired community project initiated by Ella Ho, a six-year-old girl born in Vietnam, whose natural compassion and sensitivity toward others became the spark for a growing movement of kindness in Canada. From an early age, Ella showed a deep emotional awareness of the world around her. When she learned that many children her own age were spending days, weeks, or even months in hospitals, away from their families, friends, and familiar comforts, she felt a strong desire to help them feel less alone.
Ella’s idea was simple and pure: if children in hospitals were feeling scared or lonely, perhaps a handmade card with kind words and drawings could bring them comfort. To her, a card was more than paper, it was a way to send friendship, encouragement, and hope. This childlike yet powerful insight became the foundation of what would later be known as Kids Connect Hope Canada.
Born in Vietnam and now growing up in Canada, Ella carries with her a unique sense of empathy shaped by both her cultural roots and her experiences as a young child navigating a new environment. Her compassion is not abstract; it is personal. She relates to hospitalized children as peers, children who want to play, laugh, and feel safe, just as she does. This emotional connection is what makes Kids Connect Hope deeply authentic. The project does not originate from policy or strategy, but from a child’s sincere wish to care for others.
Recognizing the importance of nurturing this meaningful idea responsibly, the project is developed and led by her father, Eric Ho, who serves as the Founder and Program Director. Eric transformed Ella’s inspiration into a structured community initiative while preserving the child-led spirit that defines the project. He works closely with volunteers, educators, healthcare partners, and community organizations to ensure that Kids Connect Hope operates with integrity, inclusivity, and long-term sustainability.
Under this guidance, Kids Connect Hope is supported by the TapLook Community Fund, allowing the initiative to expand thoughtfully while remaining rooted in its original mission. The project currently delivers two core initiatives that reflect Ella’s original vision of spreading kindness across generations.
The first initiative, Hope Cards, focuses on children receiving care in hospitals. These handmade cards are created by young volunteers and filled with messages of encouragement, warmth, and positivity. For a child facing illness or medical treatment, receiving a card made by another child can be profoundly meaningful. It communicates understanding without explanation and support without conditions. Each card serves as a gentle reminder that someone their age is thinking of them and wishing them strength and happiness.
The second initiative, Kindness Cards, extends the same spirit of care to seniors living in care homes and community settings. While Ella’s original focus was on children, the project naturally evolved to include seniors, another group that often experiences loneliness and isolation. Through Kindness Cards, young volunteers learn to express respect, gratitude, and empathy toward older generations, while seniors receive heartfelt reminders that they are valued members of the community.
Every card created through Kids Connect Hope is intentionally non-commercial, non-religious, and age-appropriate. The messages are simple but powerful: words of love, courage, appreciation, and human connection. These cards do not seek recognition; they seek connection. This approach aligns closely with the project’s values of dignity, inclusiveness, and emotional safety for recipients.
